The European Data Protection Board (EDPB) will focus on the role of data protection officers (DPOs), a position required of certain organizations under the GDPR, for its 2023 coordinated enforcement framework (CEF). The European data protection authorities (DPAs) have been reviewing the implementation of the DPO role and will report back to the EDPB, which will issue a report with recommendations early next year. This article examines the evolving role of the DPO, the CEF process and prior examination of the role by other DPAs, as discussed during a recent International Association of Privacy Professionals presentation by the EDPB’s head of activity for enforcement support and coordination, IKEA’s DPO and a director at Temple Privacy. See our two-part series “Getting to Know the DPO and Adapting Corporate Structure to Comply With the GDPR (Part One of Two)” (Jan. 25, 2017), and Part Two (Feb. 8, 2017).
