Legal aid organizations (LAOs) are increasingly adopting technological systems and platforms that help fulfill their mission. While technologies can enable legal aid attorneys to better serve those who need but cannot afford legal advice and representation, LAOs operate under unique cybersecurity risk profiles. They are responsible for safeguarding sensitive client and case information while keeping donor data and funding source information transparent. In this guest article, Eli Mattern, an attorney and the director of technology at Community Legal Services, discusses the promises and perils of using AI and other emerging technologies at LAOs, and offers practical steps for mitigating their risks.
