New global cross-border privacy rules have gained momentum as a scalable framework that supports the effective flow of data internationally. The Global Cross-Border Privacy Rules Forum announced on April 30, 2024, the establishment of two certification systems – Global Cross-Border Privacy Rules and Privacy Recognition for Processors – with the appointment of accountability agents to assess organizations seeking certification. This article discusses the history, purpose and core elements of the systems’ certifications. It also includes guidance on how data controllers and processors can certify compliance under these frameworks, and the value-add for doing so.
