The Colonial Pipeline ransomware attack proved to be a defining moment for attorneys and others professionally involved with corporate cybersecurity preparedness and response, agreed speakers at the American Bar Association’s 37th National Institute on White Collar Crime in San Francisco. The public- and private-sector panelists explored how the May 2021 ransomware attack against Colonial Pipeline exemplified the role government agencies can play in responding to such attacks, highlighted the need for companies to explore the legal risks associated with paying ransoms for data and offered advice on preparing for an incident.
